Shuffleboard Refinishing -- Give Your Game New Life!
Did you know that you can refinish a shuffleboard table yourself? Years of wear and aging can turn even the highest quality shuffleboard table into an eyesore that just isn't as nice as it used to be. Although there are professional companies you can use to do the work for you, shuffleboard refinishing can be a great do-it-yourself project.
** Refinishing Tip ** Of course if you're a 'do-it-yourself' type of person you may decide to only call a contractor in to help you with the finer details of the project. Many contractors are able to complete all the work on their own but others will sub-contract out parts that they prefer other workers to complete when there may be guarantee included. Alternatively you can hire services of a general contractor or even specialized contractors for your entire project or just certain aspects of it.
So what are the steps? The first is to fill those scratches, dents and dings! This is done by applying a wood putty to the offending areas. One good choice is Durham's Water Putty. Allow the putty to dry, then move on to the next step -- sanding.
Use a 220-grit sandpaper and carefully the whole table in the direction of the wood grain. Be sure to sand thoroughly, because a good sanding job really does make all the difference in the finished product. After sanding, vacuum away all grit and sand.
Now, take a close look at your table. You will want to refill any remaining dents and scratches, then resand. After your table is smoothly sanded and all notches are filled in with putty, it's time for the next step -- clear shellac.
A good clear shellac for any shuffleboard table is Zissner Clear Shellac #4. You'll want to apply one coat and allow it to dry thoroughly. Next, you'll want to apply a clear gloss, such as Min-Wax's High Gloss clear urethane. This product costs around $30 a gallon and is easily available in any home improvement store.
** Refinishing Tip ** On bathrooms... If you don't know what the harlequin bathroom tile looks like; imagine a white tile that has smaller black diamond shapes in a grid like pattern imprinted on them and you have the harlequin style. The tiles tend to be a little longer and the pattern resembles a mimes costume in a way but you can opt for this classic design in just about any combination of colors from earthy tones to bright reds.
After applying the urethane and letting it dry, sand once more with 220 grit sandpaper. After removing all sand and grit, apply another coat of urethane in long, smooth strokes down the length of the table using a foam brush.
And it's done! It is advisable to allow a few days for the coating to dry and set before using your table again. As you'll see, shuffleboard refinishing will turn your tired old table into one that looks and performs as good as new!
