A cedar deck is an excellent way to add interest and value to any home. If you've got a deck, then you're probably no stranger to all the benefits decking can offer you. The right deck can even add value to your home, which is great if you're ever thinking of selling.

To try cedar deck refinishing yourself, you'll need to understand the process. The first step is making sure your deck is clean. Blast your deck with a high-powered garden hose to remove dirt and debris from the deck and the spaces in between the planks.

The next step is sanding. You can use a professional sanding machine or go old fashioned with plain old sandpaper. When your cedar deck is sanded to your liking, use a leaf blower or broom to remove all excess grit from the wood.

Then, it's time for primer, that is, if you're restaining your deck. If not, then you can simply apply three coats of a clear finish made for outdoor decking and you're done. But if you're going to be using a colored stain, a primer is a must. Make your own primer by mixing a small amount of stain with an oil-based polyurethane. Apply one coat of primer, and allow it to dry.

** Refinishing Tip ** Many people have now learned that huge savings can be made on their kitchen refinishing costs just by dealing with suppliers. Of course this does not include buying used equipment or quality second hand which often comes onto the market. Look in your local newspapers or stores that advertise; even the internet because you may be pleasantly surprised at the amount of kitchen equipment around. You can always contact companies to see if they have any stock they have removed, before they are forced to dispose of it as it could be in very good condition and will reduce the kitchen refinishing costs considerably.

This is followed by staining. Depending on the color you're going for, you will need to apply between one and three coats. Work in the direction of the wood for a natural look. Always allow each coat of stain to dry before going on to the next one.

The last step in cedar deck refinishing is to coat your deck with three coats of a finishing product designed for outdoor use. Choose a product that's waterproof and weatherproof for the best results.
