Is replacement the only option if your bathtub is less than desirable? Well, think again! Bathtub refinishing is a great way to give an old bathtub new life, and believe it or not, you can do it yourself.
In refinishing your bathtub, the first step is to give it a thorough cleaning and let it dry. Once that's done, sand the tub with a palm sander and give the new paint something to cling to. Work in small sections and be sure not to oversand. After sanding, remove all grit and sand thoroughly.
** Refinishing Tip ** Kitchen refinishing is certainly a very enticing project, but make sure you go about it with a mind to keeping the costs in check; most homeowners are naturally worried about the financial aspect of this type of project. Kitchen refinishing costs are always likely to be an obstacle to getting the dream kitchen you have always wanted. A fully equipped kitchen with that old world feel using lots of real wood and marble and effective use of lighting with masses of storage space may be something that stays a dream.
This is followed by applying a waterproof primer and allowing it to dry. After priming, sand lightly and once again, remove all sand and grit. Once you've done that, you can apply special paint designed for bathtubs with a spray gun. White is a classic choice for bathtubs, nevertheless if you can always opt for a different color if you wish. Some people like shades of cream and even more bold choices like blue or green. Of course, there's always classic black.
Before spraying, tape off all areas that you want to keep the paint off and make sure the bathroom is well ventilated. When painting, you'll want to work in a smooth back and forth motion and apply three coats, alllowing each to dry before moving on to the next one. Some of the paints available today for bathtubs require no top coats and are both a paint and a protective coating in one.
** Refinishing Tip ** The problem is getting the lighting just right as you do not want to have really bright lights in a bedroom but softer more relaxed shades that will not strain the eyes but still make it easy to read. The colors used when you create this type of bedroom are paramount for it to work well, so use shades of antique amber or slate blue for example. If your preference is have a room that can be used purely to relax in then refinishing the master bedroom will mean the addition of mirrors combined with extra pillows and landscape paintings; which should help to provide this effect.
Now, perhaps you are one of those people who doesn't care for this type of work. If so, then it's easy to find a professional that can come to your home and perform bathtub refinishing in only one day! It's a good idea to ask around for recommendations from trusted friends, family and peers to ensure you choose a company that's reliable and qualified.
